LED picture lighting can really bring out the color and detail of the picture or art you’re hanging in an extraordinary way. This lighting technique is a popular and safe method to turn your display from regular to breathtaking. It highlights every hue, tone, feature, and brushstroke making them shine through.

You’ve taken a lot of time carefully choosing your picture, or art, along with a its matching custom frame. The next step is getting that perfect lighting for your display that doesn’t harm your piece. That’s where LED technology makes all the difference.

Why LED Picture Lighting Matters So Much

Every picture or artwork deserves a spotlight, but not all lights are created for this reason. However, LED lights are best suited for artwork compared to traditional picture lighting because they:

  • Emit less heat keeping your picture or art from warping and discoloration.
  • Don’t give off harmful UV rays so they help prevent color fading over time.
  • Have adjustable brightness and tone so you can set the mood to your space.
  • Uses less energy and are safer than regular incandescent or halogen bulbs.

In short, LED picture lights can let your art glow without the risk of damage or raising your electric bill.

Picture Lights’ Part in Affecting the Mood

As you already know, different kinds of art stirs up different emotions. In the same way, lights plays a part in what’s felt when looking at your display. The right lighting doesn’t just lighten up your piece but also draws you into it.

  • Warm, white lighting is more sentimental and brings comfort. This is great for your family portraits or vintage art.
  • Neutral white lighting helps with clarity and focus. This is ideal for your gallery or modern interior.
  • Cool, white lighting creates a more sleek, modern feel. This accents textures and details in your piece.

The Right Light for Your Frame

Think of it like this, your custom frame is the stage and your LED lights are the spotlight. When working together, they can really bring your piece to life.

At Frame of Mind Art, we feel proportion and color temperature matter most when combining lighting with a custom frame. Simply put, you want light to flatter your picture or art without overpowering it.

LED Picture Lighting Helps Protect Your Investment

Preserving your piece is just as important as its presentation… Maybe even more so. With LED art lighting you are proactively choosing the preservation of your memories and artwork. LED lights helps safeguard your collection in several ways:

  • Prevent fading caused by ultraviolet rays that come from normal lights.
  • Reduce temperature variations that can crack paint or dry up your canvas.
  • Remove the need to dust your bulbs or replace them frequently.
  • Give a longer consistency in light stability and color steadiness.

LED Lighting vs. Traditional Lighting

LEDs aren’t just the modern choice, they’re a strategic one. LED picture lighting combines visual beauty with longevity and safety. All of which are essential for preserving your framed piece. Also, when comparing them to halogen and incandescent options, you’ll see why so many art lovers choose LED art lighting.

Integrating Lighting into Custom Framing

Lighting and framing are partners in their presentation. Therefore, they should not be separate decisions. When working with a custom framer, ask them about how lighting can add to your design plan.

Professional framers often:

  • Can recommend frame finishes that mildly reflect or absorb light.
  • Make suggestions on anti-reflective glass or plexiglass for clarity.
  • Can build mounts to place your artwork at the best angle for viewing.

Bring Your Artwork to Life

Envision a softly lit room where your art radiates your character. Each piece feels alive, speaking from the wall. That’s the power of thoughtful LED picture lighting. So, transform your space by illuminating what matters most to you.

LED strips are smoothly embedded into the side of the frame and embellished with paint and hand created spacers to hide the light structure from the display.

We added textured matting, interesting mounting methods, and stacks of finely finished frames to make it pop. Your lights come with a remote control to adjust brightness and timing of the custom light up display.

Sports Memorabilia With Trim LED Lighting

Custom framed football jacket with lighting

We push the limits of framing. You may have seen our light up frames before, but not like this. We were given this Buffalo Bills jacket, trading cards, and magazine to encapsulate in a safe home, that would serve as the centerpiece to the room.

We designed cutouts in the matting to fit around the shape of the jacket with pockets embedded underneath to house the memorabilia. The trading cards and magazine are sink-mounted into acid free foam where they are held in place without the use of adhesive. The jacket is hand-sewn to the backing board along the original seams in the jacket, so the leather and integrity go undisturbed for ages.

We segmented and fit the LED strip lighting to match the shape of the mat-board cutout. This is a dynamic touch as the viewer can see the soft light trail that outlines the jacket instead of hiding the lights within the infrastructure.

The user can choose any color of the rainbow when they turn on their light. The mat board is represents the official team colors. Each aspect of the design and framing process has been hand-picked and handmade for the jacket to look its best in a non-abrasive environment.

Volcanic Glass Plate Display Case With LED Lighting

Volcanic glass plate display

Our designers were given the challenge of securely mounting this heavy and fragile plate made from volcanic glass. The brilliant iridescent colors could only be appreciated in direct lighting, so our team installed LED light strips inside of the picture frame moulding for a dramatic glow from every angle.

Our framers are experts at building a micro-environment to preserve sensitive materials by keeping objects away from harmful environmental agents that cause them to deteriorate.

We used a bent rod technique to secure the fragile glass plate. Soft metal rods are cut and bent depending on the width and height of the object. They are then inserted at an angle into a heavy duty foam board. Plastic is gently shrunk around the tips of the rods, so the plate is only touching a soft surface that will not breakdown over time.

Custom LED Picture Frame Lighting

Frame of Mind Custom Frame Shop has been meeting the framing needs of our clients since 2008. Our team has a lot of experience in lighting pictures from the inside of our custom built frames. We do it by carefully adding LEDs to the outside of the piece using LED strips around the inner edge of the frame.

Our frame shop can seal any sized object into a shadow box display by building onto the moulding to fit the exact specs of your unique artwork. We also provide custom finishing to match the colors and textures you desire.

FAQ

How to light up pictures?

Use a dedicated picture light, track head, or small spotlight to light up your pictures. You can mount it above or in front of the picture frame. Angle it 30-degrees for an even spread. A cool-running LED bulb with a warm to neutral color is best. Also, your light needs to be a little brighter than the room’s light. Sunlight as well as moisture can ruin your picture so keep it away from these.

What lighting is best for art?

Usually LED lighting is the best lighting for art. The LEDs with a high color index of CRI 90+ show colors better. Also, LEDs give off little heat and UV that helps protect the piece. A warm to neutral color temperature in the 2700K–3500K range will work well for most artwork. Warmer light flatters traditional pieces and cooler light suits modern or high detail works.

Do LED lights damage artwork?

LEDs are one of the safest methods for lighting artwork. This is because they emit very little heat and low UV rays. The main cause of fading and damage in artwork are UV rays. But, any light can cause gradual decay over time so use dimmable LEDs. Don’t use a high bright setting or put them too close to your piece. Also, avoid direct sunlight to help reduce fading or heat damage.
