A Custom Baseball Shadow Box

Sometime an object is unique and does not allow for conventional framing methods. Take for example the baseball shown below. A regular shadow box frame would hide parts of the ball’s surface. So, our framing experts got to work finding a harmless alternative to displaying the baseball.

In this case, we went with a fine mesh overlay to help support and protect the object. We used a hidden hole in the foam to cradle the ball and allowed the mesh to be pulled through to the underlying layer. Then, our custom framers used zip-tie like straps to secure the ball in the foam. These ties along with gravity holds the baseball in place. Sometimes, heavier objects need the extra support.

Conservation Quality Shadow Boxes

First and foremost, never use adhesives to mount your objects. Adhesives are usually meant to be permanent so it will ruin the items you are framing.

Also, avoid using materials that contain acids to prolong the life of the items to be displayed. Acidic materials cause yellowing over time and can slowly eat away at the surface of an item.

At Frame of Mind custom frame shop, we use acid-free materials for anything that touches the piece. Also, all of our matting is buffered to eliminate cellulose which is an acidic material.
