David Hettel, Ormond Beach Florida Artist, is trained in fine art and graphic design, but experiments as an artist and his technique is self-taught. For the last 20 years David has been making a living in Decorative Painting, owning a company that creates murals, faux finishes and artistic plaster surfaces. Influenced by both parents, He has been creating art for as long as he can remember.
His interest in Psychedelic Art goes back to high school when he started contracting fine art commissions and became especially interested in the art of Rick Griffin. After some College, because of his love of surfing, he gravitated to Hawaii where he found his niche in sign painting and surfboard airbrushing. David finally returned to Florida, and starting a decorative painting business. He began to learn, on the job, more of the skills and techniques he now uses in his Fine Art.
The Art of David Christian Hettel
I am a lifelong lover of all things saltwater, having grown up surfing and diving in Florida, Hawaii, and California. I have made a living as a decorative painter since 1999. I developed the talents that have led to my style of layering patterns and textures, using ocean life forms and beach washed objects for my templates and calligraphs.
David Hettel’s current exhibition has been in the works since 2019. Many of these feature vertical textures of gesso, plasters, silver, and gold leaf. You will see recurring abstract interpretations of “Mermaid’s Purses”, corals and seagrasses, as well as whimsical Sci-Fi fantasy influences in pieces such as “Surf Zone invasion of The Extraterrestrials”.
David Hettel won first place in Best Contemporary Faux Finish in Las Vegas at the 2004 Fauxcademy of Decorative Painting. Frame of Mind Custom Framing & Art Gallery is excited to welcome his newest exhibition.
Visit Frame of Mind Art Gallery May 1st for Ormond Art Walk to meet the artist, enjoy entertainment, and refreshments from Gold Leaf Coffee Co.
